This 6 mm² earth cable is a flexible, single-insulated copper wire with halogen-free insulation. The green/yellow insulation shows at a glance that it is an earth or protective conductor. Because the insulation is halogen-free, no corrosive halogen gases are released in a fire and smoke is kept to a minimum.
What do you use a 6 mm² earth cable for?
Green/yellow is reserved exclusively for the protective conductor, so that everyone can recognise the earth. A 6 mm² wire is used for purposes such as:
- equipotential bonding, for example between metal water, gas or heating pipes and the main earthing terminal
- the protective conductor of a circuit wired with separate 6 mm² conductors in conduit
- connecting a metal support structure, such as that of solar panels, to earth, if the design provides for this
AREI (the Belgian electrical installation regulations) specifies which cross-section is required where. Your electrician will decide whether 6 mm² is sufficient or whether a heavier conductor is needed.
Benefits
- halogen-free: no corrosive halogen gases in a fire
- low smoke emission and self-extinguishing
- fire class B2ca under the European Construction Products Regulation (CPR)
- finely stranded, flexible conductor that is easy to bend
Good to know
This wire has no outer sheath; your electrician will decide how it is protected and fixed. When bending, keep to a bending radius of at least four times the outer diameter, about 2 cm. Install the wire at temperatures between -5 °C and +50 °C. A green/yellow wire must never be used as a line or neutral conductor. Connecting the earth is a job for a qualified electrician. Afterwards, the installation must be inspected by an approved inspection body, which will, among other things, test the earthing.
