A made-to-measure screen is external sun protection for your window: a fabric that rolls up into a cassette above the window and comes down along two guide rails. Because it stops the sun before it reaches the glass, it keeps your home much cooler than curtains or internal blinds, and you can still see out through the fabric. Here you configure your screen yourself: sizes, motor, fabric and colour, and the price is calculated as you go. You install it yourself, using the installation instructions that come with it.
Why a zip screen?
- The fabric is locked into the guide rails by a zip along both sides. It stays taut, does not flap and no light or insects get in at the sides.
- Solar-powered: no electrician and no cables through the wall. Unpack, mount and use.
- Somfy motors, on the 230 V screens too: quiet, reliable and compatible with your other Somfy sun protection.
- Any RAL colour at no extra cost for the cassette and guide rails, in fine-textured or smooth matt, so the screen matches your windows.
- Made to measure, up to 6000 mm wide and 6000 mm high (no more than 18 m²); solar-powered up to 4000 mm wide and 3500 mm high, but not both at once. The configurator picks the cassette that goes with your sizes.
Solar-powered or 230 V?
A solar-powered screen has a solar panel in the front of the cassette, on the left, in the middle or on the right, and a battery in the cassette that powers the motor. The panel needs direct sunlight for at least three quarters of an hour a day, so a north-facing façade is not suitable. That makes it the easiest choice to install yourself: there is nothing to connect. You operate it wirelessly with the Smoove wall transmitter that comes with it, or with a Situo remote control.
A 230 V screen runs on mains power. With the wireless Somfy io motor you operate it with the Somfy transmitter that comes with it. With a Somfy TaHoma Switch you can also operate it from your smartphone, and with a sun sensor it lowers automatically when the sun shines; neither is included in the price. With the wired Somfy motor you operate it with an ordinary wall switch or through your home automation system; your electrician connects it.
Inside the reveal or face-fixed?
Inside the reveal, the screen hangs between the walls of the window opening, with the cassette under the lintel. It then barely protrudes from the façade, but the cassette takes up part of the opening at the top and may sit in front of the glass. Also check that the reveal is deep enough for the cassette.
Face-fixed, the screen goes on the façade: the cassette above the opening, the guide rails beside it. Your window then stays completely clear.
Which fabric should you choose?
- Serge 5%: the most popular screen fabric. It keeps out most of the sun's heat and gives you a clear view outside during the day.
- Serge 1%: more tightly woven. Less light and more privacy, with still some view.
- Serge 0%: blackout. Ideal for a bedroom; a little light always gets in along the cassette, the zip and the bottom bar.
All three are fibreglass fabrics with a PVC coating: they do not stretch and do not rot. Serge 5% comes in 49 colours, including two-tone versions such as grey on the outside and white on the inside; Serge 1% in 9 and Serge 0% in 8 colours. A dark fabric gives the clearest view out, a light fabric reflects more of the sun's heat.
Maintenance
Rinse the fabric now and then with a gentle jet of water, and clean the cassette and guide rails at least once a year with water and a mild, pH-neutral cleaner. Only wipe the solar panel with a microfibre cloth. Never lubricate anything, only roll up a wet fabric once it is dry, and switch off any automatic control when it freezes.
Cassette and guide rails
The larger the screen, the larger the cassette: 90, 110, 130 or 150 mm, each as high as it is deep (the 90 cassette is 110 mm deep). There are also the slimmer 130 S (130 mm high, 96 mm deep) and 150 S (150 mm high, 116 mm deep) cassettes, useful when the reveal is not deep enough. The configurator shows the minimum cassette your sizes require; you can always choose a larger one. Solar-powered screens always have a 130 or 150 cassette. As standard you get slim guide rails of 33 × 53 mm. For a sleeker look, choose cassette-depth guide rails: they are as deep as the cassette, so the cassette and guide rails form a single unit (the cassette is then at least 110 mm).
How to measure
You order a screen by its overall size: the width across both guide rails and the height from the top of the cassette to the bottom of the guide rails.
- Inside the reveal: measure between the walls at three heights and take the smallest measurement minus 10 mm. Measure the height from under the lintel down to the window sill and subtract 10 mm: the guide rails stop 8 mm above the window sill.
- Face-fixed: add two guide rails to the width of the opening (2 × 33 mm, so + 66 mm). For the height, measure the opening down to the window sill, add the cassette (+ 90 to + 150 mm) and subtract 8 mm.
Not sure? For every size, the drawing in the configurator shows the opening that goes with it, so you can see straight away whether it is right. The measuring guide explains everything step by step.
Installing it yourself
The screen comes in one piece: cassette, guide rails and fabric are already assembled and the motor is set. You screw the guide rails in place, hang the cassette and pair the transmitter. We do not offer installation. Ordering several screens, or is your window larger than 18 m²? Then request a quote.
Good to know
We make every screen to your sizes and in your colour. That is why it is excluded from the right of withdrawal, and why we check every order before it goes into production. The delivery time is about 20 working days.
