A 50A circuit breaker (MCB) protects a supply cable rather than an ordinary circuit: the cable from the main consumer unit to a sub-board, or a heavy single-phase load. Both poles are protected.
When do you choose 50 A?
- supplying a sub-distribution board in an outbuilding, garage or workshop
- a heavy single-phase load for which the manufacturer specifies 50 A
A 50 A rating calls for a heavy cable; the electrician calculates the cross-section in accordance with AREI (the Belgian electrical installation regulations) and checks whether your supply and the upstream protection can handle that load.

Installation and connection
This heavy-duty MCB, the Schrack BMS4 C 50/2 (BM417250), takes up only 2 modules, approximately 35 mm. It is designed for a rated voltage of 230/400 V AC at 50/60 Hz. The terminals accept conductors from 1 to 25 mm². The breaking capacity is 4.5 kA to EN 60898-1 and 6 kA to EN 60947-2. The MCB is calibrated at 30 °C and suitable for ambient temperatures from -5 °C to +40 °C.
Good to know
Leave the installation to a qualified electrician. If you modify or extend your installation, you must then have it inspected by an approved inspection body, as AREI requires.
