Use this 16A B-curve circuit breaker (MCB) to protect a circuit that needs a little more power than a small lighting circuit. The Schrack BMS4 disconnects both conductors as soon as the current rises too high or a short circuit occurs.
What is a 16 A B-curve MCB for?
On a 1.5 mm² conductor, 16 A is the highest rating that AREI (the Belgian electrical installation regulations) permits in homes. A B curve is mainly chosen for:
- a long circuit, where the short-circuit current at the end of the cable remains low
- heating appliances without inrush current, such as an electric radiator or heated towel rail
- an appliance for which the manufacturer specifies a B16
Why a B curve?
A B-curve MCB trips magnetically at 3 to 5 times the rated current, so at 16 A from as little as 48 to 80 A. This means a smaller short-circuit current is enough to make it trip quickly. The downside: motors and large amounts of LED lighting with a high inrush current can cause nuisance tripping; a C-curve MCB is a better fit there.
Installation and connection
This MCB takes up two modules on the DIN rail. Because the terminals are open on both sides, a busbar can run along the top as well as the bottom. The terminals accept conductors from 1 to 25 mm².
Good to know
This MCB is designed for alternating current; the DC side of a solar panel system requires separate DC protection. Leave the installation to a qualified electrician; once the work is complete, a mandatory inspection by an approved inspection body follows.
