This 25A circuit breaker (MCB) is intended for circuits that demand more than a socket circuit can handle. It protects both poles against overload and short circuit. Thanks to its C characteristic, it stays on during the brief current surge when a compressor or motor starts.
When do you choose 25 A?
In a home, AREI (the Belgian electrical installation regulations) requires a conductor of at least 4 mm² for a 25 A MCB. Typical applications:
- an electric cooker or a smaller hob on 230 V
- a heat pump or air conditioning unit for which the manufacturer specifies 25 A
- the supply cable to a sub-board in the garage, the garden shed or the loft
In a 3×230 V network, a circuit like this is connected between two phases. With its two protected poles, this MCB is suitable for such circuits, just as it is for a 3N×400 V network.
Benefits
- calibrated at 30 °C, with correction curves from Schrack for warmer or cooler enclosures
- breaks short-circuit currents up to 4.5 kA to EN 60898-1, the standard for household installations
- toggle can be locked during maintenance
- can be extended with an auxiliary contact, fault signal contact or shunt trip
Connection in the consumer unit
With a cable of 4 mm² or more, you have plenty of margin: the terminals accept up to 25 mm², solid or flexible with a bootlace ferrule. The supply can come in from the top or the bottom, and the twin terminals also let you connect a busbar.
Good to know
Always follow the electrical rating stated in the appliance's manual. Choosing the cable and the MCB, as well as the installation itself, is a job for a qualified electrician, and the installation must then be inspected by an approved inspection body.
