In a home, this 300 mA residual current device (RCD) usually serves as the general or main RCD, at the origin of the installation, immediately after the meter. It monitors all circuits together for leakage currents and switches everything off in the event of an insulation fault. This limits the risk of fire and of a dangerous touch voltage.
What is a 300 mA main RCD for?
AREI (the Belgian electrical installation regulations) requires an RCD of no more than 300 mA at the origin of every domestic installation. The 2-pole version suits a two-conductor supply: phase and neutral, or two phases in a 3×230 V network. Downstream, the bathroom, washing machine, tumble dryer and dishwasher also get their own 30 mA RCD.
Benefits
- Type A: also detects pulsating DC faults from appliances with electronics
- short-circuit withstand up to 6 kA with a back-up fuse of max. 63 A gG
- top or bottom feed, mounting in any orientation
- IP40 once installed in the consumer unit
Installation and connection
As the main RCD, it goes at the front of the row, followed by the circuit breakers and the 30 mA RCDs. Each terminal combines a cage terminal and a lift terminal, so a busbar and a cable fit together. The tightening torque for the PZ2 screws is 2 to 2.4 Nm.
Good to know
The 40 A rating must suit your supply and the upstream protection; your electrician will check this. Leave the installation to a qualified electrician. The mandatory inspection by an approved inspection body then follows: among other things, the inspector measures the earth resistance and usually seals the main RCD.
