A red 6 mm² solar cable connects your solar panels to each other and to the inverter. This cable complies with EN 50618, the European standard for PV cables, and therefore carries the type designation H1Z2Z2-K. It is made to withstand years of sun, rain, frost and ozone, on the roof or in a ground-mounted array.
Why choose 6 mm²?
The thicker the conductor, the less energy is lost along the way. At 3.39 Ω/km, 6 mm² has a third less resistance than 4 mm² (5.09 Ω/km). This pays off especially over a long distance between the roof and the inverter, or with high-current panels. Your installer will work out the correct cross-section based on the string current, the length and the permissible voltage drop.
Benefits
- double-insulated, so suitable for protection class II installations
- tinned, flexible copper conductor that counters corrosion at the connectors
- highly resistant to UV radiation (EN 50289-4-17/A), weathering and ozone (EN 50396)
- resistant to acids, alkalis, oil, grease and ammonia, for example on livestock buildings
- halogen-free, flame-retardant and low-smoke in the event of fire
- expected service life of more than 25 years according to IEC/EN 60216-1
Application and installation
The cable can be laid outdoors, indoors and in conduit. Direct burial is also possible, provided the trench is level, free of stones and has a sand bed, and the cable is protected against rodents, aggressive substances and third-party interference. Keep to a bending radius of at least 3 times the outer diameter and pull with no more than 90 N (15 N per mm²). At an ambient temperature of 60 °C, a single cable in free air carries 70 A; at higher temperatures, a correction factor applies.
Good to know
Use connectors that are suitable for 6 mm² and for this outer diameter, and crimp them with the correct tool. Solar panels produce DC voltage as soon as light falls on them, even when the inverter is switched off. So leave the installation and connection to a qualified installer. Before it is put into service, the installation must be inspected by an approved inspection body.
