In Belgian homes, a 20A circuit breaker (MCB) goes with 2.5 mm² cable. This Schrack BMS4 with B tripping curve protects both conductors of the circuit and trips as soon as the current stays too high for too long or a short circuit occurs.
Use in the home
AREI (the Belgian electrical installation regulations) allows an MCB of up to 20 A on 2.5 mm² cable in homes. The B version is mainly chosen for:
- a socket circuit with a long cable, for example to the garage or garden shed
- an electric water heater or a heating appliance
- an appliance for which the manufacturer specifies a B20
B or C curve?
The B curve trips magnetically at 3 to 5 times the rated current, the C curve only at 5 to 10 times. For a washing machine, tumble dryer or other appliance with a motor, a C20 is usually the better choice to avoid nuisance tripping. If in doubt, follow your electrician's recommendation or match what is already in your consumer unit.

Good to know
Have the MCB installed by a qualified electrician, who will also decide which circuits are grouped on which residual current device (RCD). After a new connection or an extension, the installation must be inspected by an approved inspection body.
