In Belgian homes, a 20A circuit breaker (MCB) goes with 2.5 mm² cable. This Schrack BMS4 protects both conductors of the circuit and trips as soon as the current stays too high for too long or a short circuit occurs.
Use in the home
AREI (the Belgian electrical installation regulations) allows an MCB of up to 20 A on 2.5 mm² cable in homes. That is why you often see this rating on:
- socket circuits in the living area, kitchen or bedrooms
- a dedicated circuit for a washing machine, tumble dryer or dishwasher
- an oven or an electric water heater
For washing machine, tumble dryer and dishwasher circuits, AREI also requires a 30 mA residual current device (RCD).

Installation and connection
The MCB clips onto a standard DIN rail, alongside your other modular devices. Properly tightened terminals (2 to 2.4 Nm, according to Schrack) prevent connections from overheating. With the consumer unit cover fitted, it achieves IP40.
Good to know
Have the MCB installed by a qualified electrician, who will also decide which circuits are grouped on which RCD. After a new connection or an extension, the installation must be inspected by an approved inspection body.
