A 4-pole 50A circuit breaker (MCB) protects a heavy-duty three-phase circuit, usually the supply to a sub-distribution board. The three phases are protected and the neutral is switched with them.
When do you choose 50 A?
- supplying a three-phase sub-distribution board
- a workshop or commercial premises with its own distribution board
- a three-phase appliance rated at 50 A per phase
A neutral conductor is a prerequisite (3N×400 V). The electrician determines the cable cross-section in accordance with AREI (the Belgian electrical installation regulations).

Installation and connection
The Schrack BMS4 C 50/3N (BM417850) takes up 4 modules, approximately 70 mm, and is designed for a rated voltage of 230/400 V AC at 50/60 Hz. The neutral is switched but is not itself protected. The terminals accept conductors from 1 to 25 mm². The breaking capacity is 4.5 kA to EN 60898-1 and 6 kA to EN 60947-2. The MCB is calibrated at 30 °C and suitable for ambient temperatures from -5 °C to +40 °C.
Good to know
Leave the installation to a qualified electrician. If you modify or extend your installation, you must then have it inspected by an approved inspection body, as AREI requires.
