A 30 mA residual current device (RCD) continuously compares the current flowing into a circuit with the current flowing back. If current leaks away, through a person or a faulty appliance, it switches off within a fraction of a second. This Schrack BCF6 does this for 2-pole circuits, with a rated current of 40 A.
Where do you install a 30 mA RCD?
AREI requires an additional RCD of no more than 30 mA for areas and circuits including:
- the bathroom and shower room
- the washing machine, tumble dryer and dishwasher circuits
It is installed downstream of the 300 mA main RCD. Other circuits that need extra protection, such as outdoor sockets, can also be connected to it.

Installation and connection
The BCF6 mounts on a 35 mm DIN rail to EN 60715, in any orientation you like. The supply can be connected at the top or the bottom. The terminals accept solid conductors from 1 to 35 mm² or flexible conductors up to 2 × 16 mm².
Good to know
An RCD does not protect against overload or short circuit; the circuit breakers downstream take care of that. Schrack recommends pressing the test button every month. Have the RCD installed by a qualified electrician; an inspection by an approved inspection body is then mandatory.
