If you have a three-phase supply, this 300 mA 4-pole residual current device (RCD) is the usual choice as the main RCD. It sits at the origin of the installation and monitors the three phases and the neutral for leakage currents. If an insulation fault occurs anywhere in the house, it switches off the entire installation.
What is a 4-pole main RCD used for?
Under AREI (the Belgian electrical installation regulations), every domestic installation starts with an RCD of no more than 300 mA. An RCD only works if all live conductors pass through it; with a 3N×400 V supply, there are four. Next come the circuit breakers and, for the bathroom, washing machine, tumble dryer and dishwasher, the additional 30 mA RCDs.
Benefits
- Type A, so also sensitive to pulsating DC faults
- tripping independent of the mains voltage
- 6 kA short-circuit withstand with a back-up fuse up to 63 A gG
- red or green contact position indicator
Installation and connection
Install it immediately after the meter, at the origin of the installation. The device takes up 4 modules on the DIN rail, and the supply can come in at either the top or the bottom. Once installed in a consumer unit, it has a degree of protection of IP40.
Good to know
Check with your electrician whether 40 A per phase suits your supply capacity. Schrack recommends pressing the test button monthly; this test does not replace a measurement of the earthing. Have the device installed by a qualified electrician, after which an approved inspection body must inspect the installation.
