A solar panel roof hook is the anchor point between your roof and the panels. It sits under the roof tiles on a rafter and comes out between two tiles, where the mounting rail is attached to it. This way, wind and snow loads are transferred to the roof structure rather than to the tiles.
What is this roof hook for?
- It connects the mounting rails to the rafters, the timber structure beneath your tiled roof.
- There is no need to drill through the roof tiles: the hook passes through the gap between two tiles.
- It forms the bottom layer of the system. The rails go on the roof hooks, and the mid and end clamps that hold the panels go on the rails.
- How many roof hooks you need, and how far apart they should be, depends on your roof, the number of panels and the wind and snow loads at your location.
How a roof hook is installed
- At each hook position, a few tiles are removed to expose the rafter.
- The hook is fixed to the centre of the rafter with suitable wood screws, with its arm in the trough of the tile.
- Where the hook comes through, the tile is carefully ground out if necessary, so that it sits properly again.
- A little space is left between the hook and the tile below it: if the hook touches that tile, the tile can crack under load.
- Finally, the mounting rail is fixed to the hook. In the Corswarem range, this is done with the One Turn connecting bolt.
Good to know
- Have the roof hooks installed by a qualified installer. They will check whether your roof can take the extra load and calculate the number of hooks needed.
- A solar panel roof hook is neither a ladder hook nor an anchor point for fall protection: do not stand on it and do not attach a harness to it.
- If you combine components from different brands, have someone check that the roof hook, bolt and rail are compatible and that the warranty on each component still applies.
